MEP Abbreviations Glossary
In our industry, few people go easy on abbreviations. Here they are explained — and wherever you come across one on the site, just hover over or tap it.
A
- AHU
- The mechanical heart of a ventilation system: fans, filters, coils and heat recovery in one casing.
air handling unit
B
- BIM
- A design approach where instead of drawing lines you model real elements with properties. From the model you can extract schedules, clash detection, and documentation for building management.
building information modelling
- BMS
- The supervisory system that collects data from every technology in the building, watches alarms and lets it all be run from one place.
building management system
C
- COP
- The ratio of heat delivered to electricity consumed at a given moment. A COP of 4 means four kilowatt-hours of heat for every one kilowatt-hour of electricity.
coefficient of performance
Č
- ČSN
- National technical standard. Specifies requirements such as fresh air volume, noise levels, or equipment safety.
Czech technical standard
D
- DPS
- Detailed design stage used as the basis for actual on-site installation.
construction execution documentation
- DSP
- Design stage used by the building authority to assess the construction project.
building permit documentation
E
- EAC
- A filter that charges dust particles and captures them on collector plates. Compared to a conventional filter cartridge, it has a lower pressure drop and can be washed.
electrostatic air cleaner
- EER
- The ratio of cooling capacity to electrical power consumed.
cooling efficiency ratio
- ENEX
- A registry of certificates, audits, and assessments managed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
energy documents database
- EPC
- The mandatory document rating a building's energy performance — PENB in Czech.
energy performance certificate
H
- HVAC
- English abbreviation for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The international equivalent of the Czech term TZB.
heating, ventilation, air conditioning
K
- KJ
- A device that produces electricity and heat simultaneously. Fuel utilisation is significantly higher than with electricity generation alone.
cogeneration unit
M
- MaR
- Sensors, controllers, and a control system that maintain set values — temperature, humidity, flow rate — without human intervention.
measurement and control
- MEP
- The building services trades — the English counterpart of the Czech abbreviation TZB.
mechanical, electrical and plumbing
- MPO
- The central authority responsible for energy legislation and the ENEX database.
Ministry of Industry and Trade
P
- PBŘ
- Part of the documentation specifying fire resistance, escape routes, and the behaviour of ventilation systems in the event of a fire.
fire safety design
- PENB
- A mandatory document assessing the energy performance of a building. It is prepared by an energy specialist and registered in the ENEX database.
energy performance certificate of a building
- PM2,5
- Particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres. They penetrate deep into the lungs, which is why the purpose of filtration is to capture precisely these.
fine particulate matter
R
- RDS
- Documentation prepared by the contractor for its own execution, building upon the construction execution documentation.
as-built documentation
S
- SCOP
- Heating coefficient averaged over an entire heating season. A fairer metric than COP for comparing heat pumps.
seasonal heating coefficient
T
- TČ
- A device that transfers heat from outdoor air, the ground, or water into the heating system. For every kilowatt-hour of electricity it delivers several kilowatt-hours of heat.
heat pump
- TDS
- A specialist representing the investor's interests on site — monitors quality, scope, and compliance with the design.
client's technical supervision
- TNS
- A vessel operating under pressure for which regulations require periodic inspections — typically expansion vessels and storage tanks.
stable pressure vessel
- TVOC
- A collective indicator of gaseous organic compounds in indoor air — from furniture, adhesives, paints, and cleaning products. Measured when assessing indoor air quality.
total volatile organic compounds
- TZB
- A collective term for HVAC, heating, cooling, sanitary installations, gas, and measurement and control — everything that distributes heat, cold, air, and water in a building.
building technical installations
V
- VRF
- Air conditioning system in which a single outdoor unit serves multiple indoor units, with refrigerant flow controlled according to the actual demand of each unit.
variable refrigerant flow system
- VZT
- A system that supplies fresh air to a building, extracts stale air, and along the way filters, heats, or cools it.
ventilation technology
Z
- ZTI
- Water supply, drainage, and fixtures in a building.
sanitary installations
- ZZT
- Recovery. Outgoing warm air transfers its heat to incoming fresh air — without the two streams mixing.
heat recovery
