Heat pump replacing a gas boiler

An older house with radiators. Instead of a quick source replacement, we first calculated the losses and modified the system — otherwise the heat pump would have been running expensively.

Scope of Work

The owners wanted to move away from gas. The house has original radiators designed for high water temperatures, which is exactly the situation where a heat pump alone will not deliver savings.

  • Heat loss calculation and heating system assessment
  • Replacement of two undersized radiators so the system could operate at a lower temperature
  • Air-to-water heat pump in a cascade with bivalent backup heating
  • Connection to domestic hot water heating and the storage tank
  • Hydraulic balancing of the system and grant processing under power of attorney

Outcome

After the first winter we returned and fine-tuned the equithermal curve based on actual operation. The system now runs at a lower water temperature than originally designed, and the heat pump maintains a good heating factor.
